MINISTERS OF RELIGION ARRIVED
FROM ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND
BY THE "TRAVANCORE"

We have the pleasure to announce the safe arrival of three additional ministers to labour in the colony. The Rev. Benjamin Cuzens from Broadway, Worcestershire; the Rev. John Allen from Glasgow, and the Rev. Ingram Moody from Old, in Northamptonshire. These gentlemen have each resigned their several charges in England and Scotland, and bring with them strong recommendations to ministers in the colony. The following extract from the Rev. Dr. John Dunmore Lang's letter may be interesting to the friends of religion among us: -

"Fellow colonists and Christian friends, permit me to recommend to your friendly offices and Christian regards the following ministers of religion, who are now on the eve of their departure, per the ship "Travancore," for Port Phillip; intending to settle as ministers of the Gospel, in your magnificent province, wherever Divine providence may open up to them a field of usefulness in the Christian ministry, and afford them a reasonable prospect of adequate support. Being all decidedly opposed to state endowments for the support of religion, they cast themselves for the future on the good providence of God on the one hand, and your Christian sympathy on the other; which I have taken the liberty to assure them on your behalf, as being myself a colonist of old standing, and therefore well acquainted with your views and feelings, that they will not do so in vain."

"I would gladly have given them individually notes of introduction to those of your number, with whom I have the honor to be personally acquainted, but as I am unable at present to afford either the time or the labor this service would have required, I feel persuaded that you will consider it quite unnecessary. Coming to you, as I trust they will, in the fullness of the blessings of the gospel of Christ, they will be their own epistles of commendation and be welcomed for their work sake. Such is my petition, and such is my request in behalf of these ministers of religion who are going out to settle for life in your province."

"The expense of their emigration especially with the large families that two of them have, is of itself considerable, and entirely exhausts the means of a minister of the gospel in this country who derives his support entirely from their people. But as that expense has been defrayed from other sources, and has not fallen upon you, I trust you will be the more willing to grant them such timely support as they will respectively require."

"The support of a minister of the gospel who zealously endeavours to discharge his transcendentally important duty, can never be burdensome to the inhabitants of a rapidy rising and highly prosperous colony."
